Funding available for volunteer fish and wildlife projects

OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is now accepting applications from volunteer groups and individuals seeking financial support for local projects that benefit fish and wildlife.

Dave Gadwa, coordinator of WDFW's Volunteer Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Enhancement Program, said the agency plans to distribute $1.6 million in grants to volunteers over a two-year period, beginning July 1.

Individual grants, which in past years have ranged from $300 to $75,000, are designed to help volunteers meet the cost of purchasing materials necessary for projects approved by the agency. Grant funding cannot be used for wages or benefits.

"This funding is specifically earmarked for volunteer programs," Gadwa said. "It's designed to help volunteers cover their costs."

Typical projects funded in the past involve habitat restoration, improving access to fish and wildlife areas for disabled persons, fish and wildlife research, public education and fish-rearing projects that benefit the public.

The first deadline for applying for the funds is April 30, 2001. Application materials may be obtained by contacting Dave Gadwa, WDFW Cooperative Projects Coordinator at 600 Capitol Way, N., Olympia 98501-1091.
