Feb. 2 meeting focuses on proposed 1998 halibut fishing seasons

OLYMPIA -- People interested in sports halibut fishing have an opportunity to comment on the proposed 1998 season at a public meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Feb. 2. The meeting will be held in room 172 of the Natural Resources Building.

The building is located at 1111 Washington St. SE in Olympia.

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) biologists will review recent halibut management decisions by the Pacific Fishery Management Council and the International Halibut Commission. In addition, there will be a discussion of proposed 1998 halibut seasons for Puget Sound and the Washington coast.

Following public comment, WDFW fish managers will make recommendations for the fishing season to the national Marine Fisheries Service. NMFS will make the final decision on seasons.

The Feb. 2 workshop will be accessible to people with physical disabilities. Sharon Carr, a WDFW employee, can arrange for sign language interpretation or other assistance. Carr's phone number is (360) 902-2830.
