Proposed 1997 halibut fishing seasons to be reviewed on Feb. 4

OLYMPIA -- Anglers and other people interested in sports halibut fishing can comment on the proposed 1997 season at a public meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 4 in room 172 of the Natural Resources Building.

The building is located at 1111 Washington St. SE in Olympia.

Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists will review recent halibut management decisions by the Pacific Fishery Management Council and the International Halibut Commission and discuss proposed 1997 seasons for Puget Sound and the Washington coast.

After receiving the public comments, the Department of Fish and Wildlife will make recommendations for the fishing season to the National Marine Fisheries Service. NMFS will make the final decision.

The Feb. 4 workshop will be accessible to people with physical disabilities. Norma Wright, with the department's Fish Management Program, can arrange for sign language interpretation or other types of assistance. Wright's telephone number is (360) 902-2707.
