Groundfish plan topic of public meetings
A draft strategic plan for managing groundfish off the Washington coast will be the topic of public meetings July 31 in Seattle and August 1 in Montesano.
Hosted by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW),the meetings will focus on the goals and objectives in the draft "Groundfish Fishery Strategic Plan," developed by the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC). The draft plan calls for more conservative harvest strategies including a proposal to reduce the current commercial fishing fleet size by 50 percent.
The July 31 meeting will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the National Marine Fisheries Service, 7600 Sandpoint Way NE., in Seattle. The August 1 meeting will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at the WDFW regional headquarters, 48 Devonshire Road, in Montesano.
Copies of the draft strategic plan may be requested from the PFMC by calling (503) 326-6352 or writing to 2130 SW Fifth Ave, Suite 224, Portland, OR 97201. Written comments on the contents of the plan may be sent by September 1 to the PFMC at the same address.
The council will consider final adoption of the strategic plan at its meeting the week of September 11 in Sacramento, Calif.
