Pygmy rabbit, amphibian survey volunteers needed now
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) needs volunteers
now for surveys of endangered pygmy rabbit burrows and amphibians in central
Washington.
The rabbit burrow surveys, which involve walking three to five miles a day, will
be conducted between March 22 and April 6 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting from
Ephrata. Volunteers should be prepared to walk in a variety of possible weather
conditions. They are advised to bring long sleeved shirts, long pants, sturdy walking
shoes or boots, hats, appropriate layers for cold to hot weather, sunscreen, tick
repellent, sack lunch, drinking water, and a daypack.
All rabbit survey volunteers must attend a one-and-a-half-hour training session
prior to surveying, unless they attended training for last fall's surveys. Training at
WDFW's Ephrata regional office (1550 Alder St., N.W.) is scheduled for:
- Saturday, March 22, 7 - 8:30 a.m.
- Tuesday, March 25, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
- Saturday, March 29, 7 - 8:30 a.m.
- Tuesday, April 1, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
- Thursday, April 3, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
The amphibian survey will be conducted evenings (3 - 10 p.m.) between March
17 and April 11. Volunteers must be able to pack at least 15 pounds in a backpack and
must be able to hear within normal limits. They are advised to have warm clothes that
repel water, waders, tick repellent, sack dinner, and drinking water. No training is
required and volunteers will convene at WDFW's Ephrata office and transport to survey
sites.
