Big Ditch Water Access Site closing
for tide gate replacement

STANWOOD – The Big Ditch Water Access Site on Skagit Bay in northwestern Snohomish County will be closed through mid-October to accommodate a tide-gate replacement project planned by the local dike district.

The access site, owned by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), will close to the public effective May 15.

Greg Meis, WDFW assistant manager of the Skagit Wildlife Area, said the closure is necessary to facilitate the dike district's work and ensure public safety.

"The project site is right where people walk out onto the dike to recreate," Meis said. "The work will take several months, but we plan to reopen the access site prior to the fall waterfowl hunting season."

The Big Ditch Water Access Site is located two miles north of Stanwood on Old Pacific Highway. The WDFW will provide status updates at http://wdfw.wa.gov/lands/water_access/30492/.
