Hood Canal shrimp season closes for the year

OLYMPIA – The 2002 recreational shrimp season in Hood Canal has closed for the year after four days of fishing, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced today. The final day of fishing was May 29.

Thousands of fishers caught nearly 71,000 pounds of shrimp in the four days open to fishing since mid-May, according to WDFW estimates.

That is too close to the annual 73,500-pound allocation for sport fishers to open the season for another day, said Therese Cain, WDFW shellfish biologist.

"Shrimp fishers had a good season this year," Cain said. "The weather was good most days and catch rates were high. Those conditions were reflected in the harvest totals."

According to WDFW estimates, the average shrimper took home 4.3 pounds of shrimp for each day on the water.

Although the recreational shrimp fishery in Hood Canal is closed, crab fishing will be open seven days per week starting June 1. The Canal crab fishery has been on a five-days-per-week schedule (closed Saturdays and Wednesdays) since it reopened May 19.
