WDFW seeks nominations for salmon, marine fishing advisory group

OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking nominations for its Anadromous and Marine Resources Sport Fishing Advisory Group, a volunteer panel that provides recommendations to the department on a wide range of issues.

Up to 20 advisory group members will be chosen to serve two-year terms through 2004, based on their fisheries experience, willingness to engage in the management process and ability to communicate with fishery managers as well as recreational and commercial fishers.

Advisors meet as a group three or four times a year, and are asked to provide recommendations during the North of Falcon season-planning process for salmon fisheries. Because of WDFW budget constraints, advisers are responsible for their own travel expenses.

“The department relies on its advisory groups to provide first-hand knowledge on both recreational and commercial fisheries and the resource as a whole,” said Pat Patillo, WDFW andromous fish policy coordinator. “Advisors also serve as an important communication link between the department and its constituents.”

Two-year appointments to the advisory group become effective January 2003. Current members are encouraged to reapply.

Any group or individual can submit a nomination, and people can nominate themselves. Nominees do not need to be affiliated with an organized group. Nominations must be accompanied by a resume containing the following information:

  • The nominee’s name, address and telephone number
  • The nominee’s experience and reasons for wanting to be an advisor
  • A description of how the applicant would communicate with regional constituents and aid in the department’s public outreach efforts
  • The name, address and telephone number of the individual or organization submitting the nomination

Nominations must be mailed no later than Dec. 6 to Pat Pattillo, WDFW andromous fish policy coordinator, 600 Capitol Way N., Olympia, WA., 98501-1091. More information is available by contacting Pattillo at (360) 902-2705.
