State research boat to purse seine on the Columbia

OLYMPIA - A purse seine boat chartered by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will take to the Columbia River Thursday (April 10) to allow research biologists to evaluate techniques for future studies involving spring chinook and steelhead.

The 48-foot vessel, which will carry an orange banner on its port side identifying it as a WDFW research boat, will be purse seining on the river until April 20 between Bonneville Dam and the Astoria Bridge. Specifically, the researchers plan to fish in three areas-- Skamakowa, near the Kalama River mouth and near Beacon Rock.

The biologists are conducting the purse seine operation to investigate its feasibility in future fish survival studies.

Those with questions on the research study may contact Charmane Ashbrook, principal investigator for the project, at (360) 902-2672.
