Salmon fishing in Ilwaco
will close at midnight Aug. 25

OLYMPIA — The recreational fishery in Marine Area 1 (Ilwaco) will close to retention of chinook, coho and pink salmon effective at midnight on Saturday, Aug. 25, when the coho quota for the season is expected to be reached.

“Effort and catches have been very good all season, and we’re running out of the quota,” said Doug Milward, ocean salmon manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

Through Aug. 19, anglers fishing out of Ilwaco had caught 78 percent of the 58,800 coho quota and 42 percent of the 4,300 chinook guideline.

The closure in Ilwaco doesn’t affect fisheries in marine areas 2 (Westport-Ocean Shores), 3 (La Push) and 4 (Neah Bay), which will remain open seven days a week.

Milward reminds anglers that retention of all chinook (wild and hatchery), is prohibited east of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line in Marine Area 4.

More information on fishing regulations is available on WDFW’s website http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations.
