Hunters urged to use extreme caution with fire in woods

OLYMPIA Several hunting seasons open in Washington state Sept. 1, and hunters are reminded to use extreme caution with fire as tinder-dry conditions continue to exist across most of the region.

September 1 is the opening day for hunting forest grouse and mourning dove season statewide, and for Canada goose season in Grays Harbor and Pacific counties. It is also opening day for most archery deer and elk seasons. Specific season information is available in the department's big game pamphlet and in the migratory waterfowl and upland game season pamphlet on the Internet.

For updated fire danger information on a county-by-county basis, contact the Washington Department of Natural Resources website. Hunters should also contact their local fire and air quality authorities before lighting any outdoor fire.

In addition, several arson fires have been reported recently and hunters are encouraged to help by reporting any suspicious activity or information toll free 1-800-55-ARSON. A reward may be given for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of forest arsonists.
