Commission adds land to Skagit Wildlife Area

OLYMPIA – The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission approved the purchase of nearly 45 acres of land on South Padilla Bay in Skagit County during a special meeting yesterday (Dec. 28).

The land, located west of Mount Vernon, will become part of the Skagit Wildlife Area, which is managed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to provide habitat for waterfowl and public access for hunters and birdwatchers.

“Purchasing this property will allow WDFW to enhance and protect important waterfowl habitat in the region and provide long-term benefits for salmon enhancement,” said Ron Ozment, chairman of the commission.

The commission, which sets policy for WDFW, was originally scheduled to consider the land transaction during its regular meeting earlier in December, but deferred action until more information on the purchase could be provided by department staff.
