WDFW seeks public comments on
draft salmon-fishing plan for Willapa Bay

OLYMPIA – Fisheries managers for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will hold a public meeting in South Bend to further discuss the development of a salmon-fishery management plan specific to Willapa Bay.

The meeting is scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the Willapa Bay Chamber of Commerce, 916 W. First St., and is a follow-up to a public meeting held in January on the same subject.

At the January meeting, copies of the draft plan were circulated and an overview was presented to members of the public, said Kirt Hughes, regional fish program manager for WDFW.

“We would now like to hear what people think of that plan,” Hughes said. “Even if people didn’t attend the January meeting, I encourage everyone with a stake in Willapa Bay salmon fisheries to attend this meeting and offer their comments. Public participation is critical in developing this plan and we want folks to be involved.”

The management plan proposed by the department would outline clear objectives for all commercial and recreational salmon fisheries in Willapa Bay, and include resource protection needs, Hughes said.

Hughes also said information gathered at the upcoming meeting about Willapa Bay fisheries will be used during the annual North of Falcon salmon-season setting process. More information on the North of Falcon process, which begins March 4 in Olympia, is available on the WDFW website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/northfalcon/.
