WDFW plants Wentworth Lake with surplus hatchery steelhead

MONTESANO--A crew from the Bogachiel Hatchery near Forks today planted 50 adult steelhead weighing an average of 8 pounds in nearby Wentworth Lake the first of several installments planned over the next few weeks.

Bill Freymond, district fish biologist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), said the agency hopes to truck as many as 200 healthy steelhead to the lake during the remaining weeks that steelhead are returning to the hatchery.

"We did this last year and people really liked it," Freymond. "It's great to be able to provide an additional recreational opportunity to anglers."

With steelhead still returning to the rivers, Freymond said hatchery staff has collected almost enough eggs to meet hatchery-production needs and has also contributed a number of surplus fish to food banks.

Wentworth Lake is open year round with the standard bag limit for trout.
