Rehab proposals for northcentral fishing lakes to be discussed July 31, 2000

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will hold a public meeting on July 31 in Moses Lake to discuss proposals to rehabilitate several fishing lakes in Grant and Okanogan counties. The meeting will be held at Moses Lake Fire Station, 701 E. Third Ave., from 7 to 9 p.m.

Fishing lakes proposed for rehabilitation in Grant County are Goldeneye, Heron, Falcon, and Coot lakes on the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge near Othello; Beda Brookies, Lizard, Meadowlark, and Aztec lakes near the Winchester Wasteway; and Dusty, Dot, Upper and Lower Spring, Cup, Cascade, Crystal, Cliff, and South Ancient lakes on the Qunicy Wildlife Area. Davis Lake in Okanogan County is also proposed for rehab.

Populations of undesirable species of fish have expanded in these waters, diminishing the trout fisheries and waterfowl production in the area. Lake rehabilitation involves treatment of the water with the natural chemical rotenone to kill fish. Rotenone is non-persistent in the environment and is not toxic to humans at the levels used to control fish. After treatment, lakes are re-stocked with hatchery trout to restore sport fishing.
