WDFW plans fishing event at Camp Murray for kids of soldiers deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan

OLYMPIA - Sixty middle schoolers with parents deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan will participate in a youth fishing event on American Lake at Camp Murray tomorrow (July 21). The event, which begins at noon, is sponsored by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

Members of the news media are invited to cover this event, provided they register with WDFW Outreach Coordinator Bonnie Long today by calling (360) 902-8308. Prior clearance and photo identification will be required to enter the base.

Parents of participating youngsters, who range in age from 12 to 15, have already signed photo consent forms.

WDFW is stocking a net pen on American Lake with trout and warmwater fish to prepare for the event, which was requested by the Camp Murray Family Support Group. WDFW staff members will provide fishing instruction, along with fishing poles and gear, for all participants.

"With a parent deployed overseas, a lot of these kids won't get a chance to go camping or take a regular family vacation this summer," Long said. "This is something WDFW can do for them."
