SEATTLE -- Good news for recreational crab pot fishers.
The recreational crab pot season in Marine Areas 8-1 and 8-2 and the Marine
Area 7 waters within San Juan County will open June 2, about six weeks earlier than
scheduled. The commercial tribal season also will open June 2.
Recent sampling tests conducted by Tulalip, Swinomish and Lummi tribal
biologists indicate hard shell crab conditions presently exceed those necessary for
opening the season in the areas, according to Washington Department of Fish and
Marine Area 8 area stretches roughly from Possession Point north to Skagit Bay
and includes Deception Pass, Hope Island, Skagit Bay, Port Susan and Port Gardner.
The daily limit is six Dungeness and six red rock crabs. The Dungeness crabs
must be males. Fishers should check the 1998 Fishing in Washington regulation
pamphlet for complete details on gear requirements and minimum size limits.
