Mystery Bay State Park closed to shellfish harvest

OLYMPIA Mystery Bay State Park in Jefferson County is now closed to the harvest of oysters, despite information to the contrary contained in the Fishing in Washington rules pamphlet, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced today.

"The closing date for oysters listed in the pamphlet is in error," said Debbra Bacon, a WDFW shellfish technician. "By regulation, the oyster season as well as the clam season ended April 30. We want to get the word out so people aren't disappointed when they get there."

Bacon explained that the local shellfish harvest is closed during summer months, due to contaminants from the park marina. The season for harvesting clams and oysters lasts from Oct. 1 through April 30, when there is much less boat traffic.

Signs have been posted at the park explaining that WDFW regulations prohibit harvesting clams and oysters during the off-season.

"We don't want people to be exposed to those impurities and we're doing what we can to correct the printing error," Bacon said.
