Crab fisher sentenced and fined

ILWACO -- The Ilwaco District Court has found a commercial crab fisher guilty of two counts of possession of undersize dungeness crabs.

William Hankins, an Oregon resident, was sentenced last Thursday to a jail sentence of one year, of which all but 15 days were suspended, and a fine of $9,500.

The amount of the fine set by Judge Doug Goelz reflected the value of the crab which were taken, according to WDFW enforcement officer Mike Cenci, who investigated the case.

"This was the most extreme case of undersize crab I've investigated in nine years of being a fish and wildlife officer," said Cenci.

WDFW enforcement officers discovered approximately 4,500 undersize crabs on Hankins' vessel during a routine inspection, during December, at an Ilwaco fish cannery.
