Hunters required to file reports in order to receive new tags

Hunters who bought transport tags for deer, elk, black bear or turkey in 2001 must submit reports of hunting activity under those tags before they will be allowed to purchase tags for those species this year.

Although the reports are mandatory, only about 75 percent of hunters submitted their reports by the Jan. 31 deadline set by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

"We need the hunt reports in order to realistically estimate harvest and hunting activity across the state," said Dave Ware, WDFW game division manager.

Hunters can submit their reports toll-free by telephone at 1 (877) 945-3492 or on-line at fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/ on the Internet.

This year, hunters who report within 10 days of taking an animal and unsuccessful hunters who file their reports by the end of the day on Jan.10, 2003, will be entered in a drawing for one of nine deer or elk special- incentive permits (see the WDFW big game rules pamphlet on the WDFW web site for more information).
