New regulations for Port Angeles and Discovery Bay shrimp districts
OLYMPIA -- The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has
announced new regulations for the Port Angeles and Discovery Bay shrimp districts.
The new regulations were developed following a public meeting to discuss shrimp stock
status and recreational fishing options for 1998.
- Port Angeles Harbor Shrimp District: Recreational shrimp
season opens on Saturday (May 9) in the Port Angeles Harbor shrimp district. On Saturdays only,
fishers may retain spot shrimp of any size as part of the 10 pound daily bag limit.
However, fishers may retain coonstripe, humpback and pink shrimp every day of
the season up to the 10-pound daily bag limit.
- Discovery Bay Shrimp District: Recreational shrimping regulations in the
Discovery Bay shrimp district have been modified for the season beginning June
6. The new regulations will allow fishers to retain spot shrimp for the first time in
several years. On Saturdays only, no more than 50 spot shrimp, 1 3/16 inches
in carapace length and larger, may be taken as part of the daily bag limit of 10
pounds. Recreational fishers may take other species of shrimp (coonstripe,
humpback, and pink) every day during the season provided the combined
harvest does not exceed 10 pounds.
Participation in the recreational harvest of shrimp in Washington waters requires
a $5 1998 Shellfish/Seaweed license for residents ages 15 to 69. Residents 70 years
of age and older pay $3 for the license.
