OLYMPIA--All of Marine Area 2 (Westport) will open to sport halibut fishing on
Sunday (May 16), the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today.
WDFW said it requested that the National Marine Fisheries Service open a
portion of the area, located 16 miles west of Cape Elizabeth, that has been closed to
halibut fishing because angler success has been low. The few halibut that have been
caught were taken more than 40 miles offshore.
Sunday's opening will allow anglers to fish the well-known halibut "hotspot" off
Cape Elizabeth which has produced large numbers of halibut in past years.
Shallow waters of Marine Area 2 are open seven days a week while deeper
areas are open five (closed Fridays and Saturdays).
The area affected by the change is described on the bottom of page 18 in the
Fishing in Washington regulation pamphlet.
