OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking nominations through June 3 for membership on its new Puget Sound Hatchery Action advisory group.
Up to 12 qualified individuals will be chosen to serve on the ad hoc advisory group, which will meet periodically through February 2012.
The advisory group will be responsible for developing recommendations for potential modifications to the state’s hatchery programs, said Heather Bartlett, Hatcheries Division manager for WDFW.
“We are at a critical stage in efforts to implement improved hatchery practices to restore salmon and steelhead and provide sustainable fishing opportunities in Puget Sound,” Bartlett said. “We want to draw on the expertise of others to help identify innovative solutions in each watershed.”
The group will be guided by plans and policies adopted by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission, including the Statewide Steelhead Management Plan and the Hatchery and Fishery Reform policy.
Actions identified by the group will provide guidance to WDFW in working with tribal co-managers to develop new management plans for state hatcheries that are unique to each watershed, Bartlett said.
Nominations must be submitted in writing and include the following information:
- Nominee’s name, address, telephone number and email address.
- Relevant experience and reasons for wanting to serve as a member of the advisory group.
- Nominee’s effectiveness in communication.
