Hearing set on sales of Columbia River sturgeon

VANCOUVER, Wash. – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will hold a public hearing here May 27 to discuss a proposal to allow Oregon gillnetters to sell sturgeon they catch in the Columbia River to Washington state fish buyers. It is already legal for them to sell their salmon catch to Washington buyers.

The hearing is scheduled at 10 a.m. at the WDFW Region 5 Office, 2108 Grand Blvd.

The proposal would make Washington law consistent with Oregon’s, which currently allows gillnetters licensed in Washington to sell both Columbia River sturgeon and salmon in Oregon, said Bill Tweit, WDFW policy leader for the Columbia River.

“The hearing will give the public a chance to comment on this proposal, which is really designed to provide consistent policies on sturgeon sales in the two states,” Tweit said.

WDFW will decide whether to adopt the proposed rule after considering public testimony.
