New regulations for sturgeon anglers

OLYMPIA -- Sturgeon caught in the Columbia River, and its tributaries from The Dalles Dam upstream to John Day Dam, must be released beginning June 8.

Washington and Oregon fish managers estimate the sturgeon guideline from The Dalles Reservoir will be reached by June 8. Fishing in the reservoir may continue, but all sturgeon must be released unharmed.

Harvest guidelines for sturgeon were set in 1991 for recreational and tribal commercial fisheries to prevent the overharvest of fish trapped between Bonneville and McNary dams. In 1995, the Washington and Oregon agencies adopted permanent regulations that allow sturgeon retention only during the first half of each year to keep the sport harvest within the guidelines.

The Columbia River, and its tributaries from John Day Dam upstream to McNary Dam, will remain open to sturgeon retention until further notice.
