No special youth, disabled deer hunt in Chelan County

No special deer hunting season for youth or disabled hunters will be conducted in Chelan County this year.

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Deer and Elk Manager Jerry Nelson announced the change in August and now reminds hunters again: The Oct. 13-21 modern firearm deer season listed in the WDFW hunting rules pamphlet for youth and disabled hunters in game management units (GMUs) 243-247 is cancelled.

"The department made a concerted effort to expand opportunities for young and disabled hunters, but an any-deer hunt for mule deer in those units would not be appropriate at this time," Nelson said.

"The local mule deer population is still recovering from the wildfires of 1994 and the harsh winter of 1996 and 1997, and we need to keep a rein on hunting seasons in that area," he added.

Other new youth and disabled hunter seasons listed in the pamphlet will proceed as scheduled, Nelson said. Hunters are advised to check the big game hunting pamphlet, available at WDFW offices or on the Internet for descriptions of GMUs, deer species and other rules.
