Fish and Wildlife Congress scheduled for January

OLYMPIA -- The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will convene the state's first-ever Fish and Wildlife Congress Jan. 10 and 11 at the Evergreen State College here.

Bern Shanks, director of the Department of Fish and Wildlife, said a primary purpose of the congress is to broaden and improve the department's communication with all organizations and individuals with an interest in the health of the state's fish and wi ldlife resources. He also wants to improve communication and understanding among the various interests.

"Given the diversity of our constituencies, differences of opinion as to how we should proceed to ensure the long term future of the resources are inevitable. The congress will offer opportunities for various points of view to be expressed, but I expec t it will also focus on the values we hold in common and shared goals that can be broadly supported," Shanks said.

"Although the challenges facing the state's fish and wildlife resources are enormous, there is strong acknowledgment that we need to work collectively toward long term solutions. We believe the congress can be an important step in this direction," he added.

The congress will take place in the Long House at the Evergreen State College. A large attendance is expected. Persons interested in attending the congress should call Kym Ryan at (360) 902-2227.
