Puget Sound crab fishing to re-open

OLYMPIA– Several areas of Puget Sound will re-open for crab fishing tomorrow (Oct. 19), the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has announced.

The re-opened areas include all of Marine Area 7 (San Juan Islands), Area 8-1 (Deception Pass, Hope Island and Skagit Bay) and Area 12 (Hood Canal), as well as the Oak Harbor portion of Marine Area 8-2 (north from Camano Head to Sandy Point on Whidbey Island) and the portion of Marine Area 9 south of the Foulweather Point-Olele Point line.

Several of those areas were closed for crabbing Oct. 15 when preliminary catch estimates indicated recreational quotas had been reached. Final in-season estimates of crab catch record cards, however, indicated that sport harvest quotas have not yet been taken.

"We were able to extend the sport fishery because of adjustments made earlier in the season, including day restrictions and lower catch limits in Hood Canal and the Oak Harbor-Everett area, " said Lisa Veneroso, WDFW shellfish policy lead.

All other marine areas are open for crabbing seven days a week with a six-crab daily limit, except the Everett portion of Marine Area 8-2 (south and east of an imaginary line between Camano Head on the southern tip of Camano Island and Sandy Point on Whidbey Island). That closure is due to soft shell conditions.
