Salmon fishing closes Sept. 7 in Marine Area 2

(OLYMPIA) – Salmon fishing out in Marine Area 2 (Westport) will close beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7, which is when the recreational coho quota will likely be met, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

Fisheries managers began allowing retention of wild coho in Marine Area 2 on Aug. 29, an action that was taken because catch rates in Marine Area 2 were lagging well behind those in other coastal areas, said Pat Pattillo, WDFW statewide salmon policy coordinator.

“Catch rates in the non-selective coho fishery at Westport have been much higher than we expected,” Pattillo said. “We are glad to provide fishing opportunity through the long Labor Day holiday weekend, but the higher catch rates on coho will not allow the fishery to continue through Sept. 19, as originally planned.”

Coastal salmon fishing continues in marine areas 1 and 3.
