DeCoursey Pond to be stocked with coho for young fishers

PUYALLUP Young fishers will get a special recreation opportunity starting Tuesday (Sept. 29), when the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife plants 400 to 500 coho salmon in DeCoursey Pond here.

Fishing will continue through Nov. 30 at the pond, which is open only to children 14 and younger. No fishing license or catch record card is required. The limit is five coho.

The coho, weighing 4 to 5 pounds apiece, were raised in the department's Voights Creek hatchery in Orting. Up to 1,500 coho eventually will be released as more surplus fish become available. The release follows a successful experimental fishery last year.

The juvenile-only fishing opportunity is sponsored jointly by WDFW and the Puyallup Parks and Recreation Dept.

The pond is located on Seventh Ave. S.W., about one mile west of the Western Washington Fairgrounds.
