Statewide youth-only bird hunt
to be held Sept. 20-21

OLYMPIA - The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's (WDFW) annual youth-only hunting season is set for Sept. 20-21.

Hunters under 16 years of age have a jump on both waterfowl and upland game birds with the special statewide two-day season, said Mick Cope, WDFW upland game manager.

"Ducks, geese, pheasants, quail and partridge are all fair game for young hunters with adults," Cope said. "It's a great opportunity for families before the regular season opens next month."

Young hunters must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age who is not hunting, Cope said.

In eastern Washington, pheasants are released on sites listed and described in the 2008 Eastern Washington Pheasant Enhancement Program pamphlet and on many Feel Free to Hunt sites in southeastern Washington. Maps of the release sites are available at http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/pheasant/eastern/, on the WDFW mapping website GoHunt at http://wdfw.wa.gov/mapping/gohunt/ , or through WDFW eastside regional offices.

Western Washington pheasant hunting is all at designated hunting sites, described in the Western Washington Pheasant Release Program pamphlet, available at http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/pheasant/western/, on the WDFW mapping website GoHunt at http://wdfw.wa.gov/mapping/gohunt/ ,or through WDFW westside regional offices.

Cope noted that all waterfowl and upland game bird bag limits and other rules apply during the special youth weekend hunt. For all details, see the Migratory Waterfowl and Upland Game Seasons pamphlet, available at all WDFW offices and license dealers, and at http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/waterfowl.
