Public meetings to address shellfish, marine fishand licensing issues

OLYMPIA--Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists will be holding a series of public meetings in western Washington beginning Sept. 29 to provide information and take comments on a variety of shellfish, licensing and marine fish issues.

Highlights include sport catch record cards for Dungeness crabs, petitions to protect Puget Sound groundfish, such as rockfish and pollock, with the federal Endangered Species Act, ocean groundfish protection efforts and the establishment of marine refuges.

Other issues to be addressed include: Puget Sound shrimp fisheries, sea urchin and sea cucumber license retirement, Columbia River smelt and Puget Sound crab season changes due to crab molting information.

The public meetings will be held at the following times and places:

  • Mill Creek: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Sept. 29 at WDFW's regional headquarters building, 16018 Mill Creek Blvd.
  • Mount Vernon: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Aqua Room of the Skagit County Public Utility District No. 1 Office, 1415 Freeway Dr.
  • South Bend: 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Oct. 6, Emergency Operations Center in the Public Safety Building, 300 Memorial Dr.
  • Chimacum: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 7, Chimacum High School Auditorium, 91 West Valley Rd.
  • Olympia: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 11, Room 172, Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington St. SE.
