Northern
leopard frog distribution and abundance
Species
concerned: Northern leopard frog Rana pipiens (state
endangered species).
Lead
Investigator: Steve Germaine, Science Division, Wildlife
Program.
Purpose
of research: Collect data on the distribution and abundance
of leopard frogs during winter, breeding and post-breeding
seasons at Potholes Reservoir, one of only two sites leopard
frogs now occur in WA. Relate abundance and reproductive
success to environmental factors including habitat condition,
hydroperiod, spatial distribution of seasonally-used habitats
and non-native predators. Use information from this study
to inform reclaimation efforts, leading to leopard frog
reintroductions into historically occupied areas that have
suffered environmental degradation.
Geographic
area: Potholes Reservoir and associated drainages in
Grant County.
Timeframe
of study: Phase 1 May 2002 to December 2004.
Joint
partners: U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of
Reclamation, Washington Department of Natural Resources.
Funding: USDI
State Wildlife Grants Program.
Are
volunteers needed: Yes. Contact Steve Germaine, WDFW
Wildlife Program, at (360) 902-2499.
