Mountain goat population distribution

Species concerned: Mountain goat.

Lead Investigator: Cliff Rice, Science Division, Wildlife Program.

Purpose of research:
Phase 1: Evaluate habitat relations for mountain goats to better understand potential and actual distribution of these animals and refine mountain goat survey protocols for use by the Department and other agencies.
Phase 2: Investigate the causes for the decline in mountain goat numbers is certain parts of the state.

Timeframe of study: Phase 1, April 2002 - June 2005; Phase 2, July 2004 to June 2008.

Joint partners: Sauk-Suiattle Tribe, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Western Washington University, and the Stilliguamish Tribe.

Funding: Phase 1, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), Sauk-Suiattle Tribe, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Western Washington University, and the Stilliguamish Tribe; Phase 2, WDFW, other future partners.
