Mr. Chairman and Members of the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission,

Last year WCTU supported the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in securing funding for the WDFW/ODFW 2002 Columbia River Spring Chinook Research Test Fishery and the monitoring of the 2002 Columbia River Spring Chinook Tangle Net Demonstration Commercial Fishery. WCTU will be supporting that effort again in writing to the Northwest Power Planning Council for the 2003 season as we did for 2002.

It is crucial that the research and monitoring program continue in 2003 for this fishery. The development of this fishery must continue to be based on the best scientific data available in order to provide the maximumn protection of the resource. If funding is not secured for both the research and the monitoring, WCTU cannot support having a 2003 Columbia River spring chinook commercial fishery.
