Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and "Eyes in the Woods" (an organization of volunteers) have teamed up to investigate the distribution and number of black-tailed deer that are afflicted with a hair-loss syndrome. If you have seen a deer that looks like it is sickly and is losing or has lost its hair you can report your observation here. The hair loss syndrome is being observed by citizens in many areas of western Washington this spring and has generated many calls to the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Here are some things to look for: whitish to yellow discoloration of hair over the rib cage, flanks, rump, and neck in the initial stages, progressing to actual hair loss in these same areas as the condition worsens. Deer may be observed to lick and groom obsessively.
