The fall 1996 Long Beach razor clam season began in October, when it was announced there would be one open day each month.
Long Beach is open Jan. 12 for recreational harvesting but fishers must obtain the 1997 license.
The department also announced it may open Long Beach for razor clam harvesting on Feb. 8 and March 9.
Clam diggers had taken only 53 percent of the harvestable Long Beach clams by the end of December. Approximately 140,000 razor clams remain to be harvested.
Doug Simons, a department biologist, said the extended season may be possible because harvesting efforts have been lighter than expected.
The Washington Department will test clams for marine toxins and issue updated health advisories prior to the scheduled openings.
All resident diggers from age 15 to 69 must have a $5 Shellfish/Seaweed license. Licenses for resident shellfish fishers age 70 and over cost $3. Non-residents must purchase a $20 license. License dealers may add a $1 service charge.
