Eastside volunteers needed to teach fishing

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) needs eastern Washington anglers and educators willing to share their fishing expertise and teaching skills with others.

WDFW training sessions for angler education volunteers will be held in Yakima, Spokane, and Tri-Cities in early March for adults at least 18 years of age.

The two-hour training sessions cover the basics of fish, fishing and conservation of fish habitat the topics that volunteer instructors are expected to teach youngsters or other adults, following a provided curriculum guide. Angling skills are helpful, but not required. All potential angler education volunteers must undergo a background check before being certified as instructors.

The training sessions are free and do not require pre-registration. The sessions, all of which begin at 7 p.m. and run through 9 p.m., are scheduled as follows:

• Yakima - March 4, at Moxee Community Center, about five miles east of Yakima on Highway 24

• Spokane - March 5, at North Spokane Library, 44 E. Hawthorne Road, about a mile north of the Division Street "Y"

• Tri-Cities - March 6, in the Assembly Room of the Workforce Training Center at Columbia Basin College, 2600 N. 20th Ave. in Pasco.
