Non-profit groups help make Spokane County fishing experience even more pleasurable

SPOKANE – Volunteers from the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club and the Spokane Fly Fishers will be cleaning up and spreading gravel at the Amber Lake Access Area in south Spokane County on Monday, May 24. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will close gates to the site on that day as the work will make the area inaccessible to vehicles while work is underway.

Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club and Spokane Fly Fishers are paying for materials and equipment to make the improvements.

“WDFW is extremely grateful to these groups and volunteers for their willingness to spend their time and funds to make the fishing experience better for everyone,” said Region 1 Fish Program manager Chris Donley. “Amber Lake is a very popular spring, summer, and fall fly fishing lake, so the fact that members are willing to come out on a Monday – possibly taking time off to do so – to help minimize impact to the public is pretty impressive.”

Members of the public are welcome to walk down to the launch to shore fish. Work is expected to be complete and the gates open again by early afternoon.

Amber Lake is located in Spokane County 12 miles southwest of Cheney. It is a very popular spring, summer, and fall fly fishing lake. Thousands of anglers from all over the state come to Amber to try their luck against rainbow and cutthroat trout that range in size from 12 to over 20 inches.
