Big Ditch water access area
on Skagit Bay closing for repair

MILL CREEK – Starting Aug.15, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will close the Big Ditch water access area in northwest Snohomish County for repairs to a tide gate.

Belinda Rotton, WDFW Skagit Wildlife Area manager, said the access area will be closed through October while the Drainage District #17 works to repair the tide gate in Big Ditch Slough.

The drainage district sold the property to WDFW to provide public access to outdoor recreation in 1966, but retained the right use the property to maintain the dike and drainage infrastructure when needed, Rotton said.

She noted that WDFW’s access site is a popular point of entry for hunters, anglers and bird watchers seeking access to the south Skagit Bay.

“We want people to know that the site will be closed during the beginning of the hunting season for waterfowl and the timeframe when the snow geese arrive in the area,” Rotton said.

The site is scheduled to reopen Oct. 31 unless there are some unexpected construction delays, Rotton said.
