WDFW seeks input for 2015 Willapa Bay salmon fisheries

OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking public comment through March 31 on how it should manage salmon fisheries this year in Willapa Bay.

A draft salmon management framework developed by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission would guide management of salmon fisheries in the bay until 2016, when a new long-term policy – currently under development – is expected to take effect.

“The long-term management policy for Willapa Bay won’t be finalized soon enough to provide direction for this year’s salmon fisheries,” said Steve Thiesfeld, regional fish program manager for WDFW. “In the meantime, we would like the public’s input on managing salmon fisheries in the bay this year.”

The draft guidance document is available on WDFW’s website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/fisheries/willapa_bay_salmon/. Written comments on may be submitted via email to willapabay@dfw.wa.gov or by mail to Steve Thiesfeld, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, 600 Capitol Way N., Olympia, WA 98501-1091.

The commission, a citizen panel appointed by the governor to set policy for WDFW, is tentatively scheduled to hold a public hearing and make a decision on 2015 salmon management for Willapa Bay when it meets Thursday, April 9, in Tumwater.

State fishery managers have been working since late October with a citizen committee and the public to develop a long-term policy to address conservation and fishery objectives for Willapa Bay salmon fisheries. The commission will receive an update on that process during the April meeting.

The public can submit comments through March 26 on the long-term management policy, which is available online at http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/fisheries/willapa_bay_salmon/.
