Trapper education

WDFW has created the online test for prospective trappers to complete the home study option more easily. People who score 80% or above will receive an email with their certification. Certifications are done manually and the email may take until the end of the next business day to be received. For those who do not pass, they can retake the test after seven days. Start the test.

Prior to purchasing their first Washington state trappers license, trappers must pass the Washington state trapper education exam. There are two different avenues that prospective trappers can take to meet the legal requirements of RCW 77.65.460.

Types of trapper education training opportunities:

  • Traditional Class: WDFW strongly recommends this class. One or more instructors offer detailed classroom instruction and practical exercises. These classes are not offered as often as basic hunter education courses, so enroll early if you want or need training.
  • Home Study Option: Students can download and review the student manual and study guide [PDF]. After studying the manual, the student can schedule a proctored exam at any WDFW regional office or with Kris Thorson in Olympia.

For additional information, contact Kris Thorson at kristopher.thorson@dfw.wa.gov or 360-902-8410.

Upcoming trapper education classes

Trapper education classes will be added as they are scheduled. Please check back later or you can complete the home study option listed above.
