OLYMPIA - Starting Thursday (March 11), the Lower Lake Cushman/Kokanee boat launch in Mason County will be closed for three or four weeks while the lake is lowered for maintenance on Cushman Dam.
The boat launch is owned by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), which announced the closure after receiving notification from Tacoma Power and Light that the lake would be lowered by at least 20 feet for the maintenance work.
"That will leave the boat ramp high and dry," said Steve Sherlock, WDFW statewide access site coordinator. "It will be both impractical and unsafe to launch a boat there until the water level comes back up."
The boat ramp provides access Lower Cushman Lake, where anglers fish for trout, bass and kokanee. "The timing of the closure could be worse, because use of the ramp usually starts picking up later in spring."
The boat ramp is located on Lower Lake Road, about 3.8 miles off Lake Cushman Road.
