Columbia Basin Hatchery to close temporarily for construction

SPOKANE – The Columbia Basin Hatchery near Moses Lake will close for approximately two weeks in May to replace damaged concrete.

Concrete pads are between each “raceway” where fish are reared at the hatchery. Due to their age and exposure to the elements, many of these pads are worn, cracked, and breaking. Construction will be underway between May 15-31, and possibly extend a little into June, to replace the concrete.

This work will require normal hatchery operations to move into areas that are normally used for public access. As a result, and to keep members of the public safe while work is underway using heavy equipment, the entire hatchery site will be closed for the duration of construction. This includes the youth fishing area behind the hatchery, which is a popular fishing spot for young people in the area.

“We understand this closure is inconvenient to hatchery visitors but hope to make the facility safer in the long term by closing it for a short period of time now,” said Brian Lyon, Hatchery Operations Manager of the Priest Rapids Complex.
