VANCOUVER, Wash.—The Columbia River ecosystem and its primitive inhabitant, the sturgeon, will be honored here with a free, two-day celebration May 22 and 23.
The eighth-annual Sturgeon Festival is hosted by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and the City of Vancouver. The festival runs from noon to 4 p.m. both days at the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 S.E. Columbia Way in Vancouver.
The event includes entertaining and educational activities for all ages. Environmental games and relays, sturgeon piñatas, interactive learning stations and Eartha the Ecological Clown will keep children entertained. Teens and adults can discuss environmental issues and career opportunities with staff from natural resource agencies and environmental organizations, watch salmon and sturgeon dissections and find out what sort of aquatic life inhabits the backwaters of the Columbia River.
Two live-animal shows will be part of the festival—a Creature Features Exhibit of exotic reptiles is scheduled May 22 and a Birds of Prey display of live raptors is slated for May 23. The handlers will answer questions concerning the life history and habitat of their animals.
