SPOKANE - You can learn how to make your yard "wildlife friendly" at the third annual free Backyard Bird and Plant Fair, June 1-2 near Deer Park, just north of Spokane.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's (WDFW) Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary program is featured at the fair. It runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, rain or shine, at the Firwood Wholesale Nursery, 8403 W. Burroughs Road in Deer Park.
WDFW staff will be on site talking about plant choices and landscaping for wildlife, supplemental feeding, problem wildlife, and other topics. WDFW's backyard program $5 informational packet will be available for purchase.
The fair will feature guided tours of Firwood's wildlife friendly yards and gardens, including identification of plants and their uses by everything from butterflies to deer. Washington State University Cooperative Extension's Spokane County Master Gardener program volunteers will provide gardening tips.
Local birding and gardening clubs, and vendors of backyard bird and garden supplies, will also be available.
To reach Firwood, drive 14 miles north of Spokane on Hwy. 395, turn west (left) on Burroughs Road just south of Deer Park, continue 1-1/2 miles to Monroe Road, left on Monroe and then immediately right back on to Burroughs, continue 1-1/2 miles to nursery on left side. Watch for signs.
