News release Jan. 11, 2000
OLYMPIA-Hunters and other interested persons will have several opportunities to comment on proposed hunting season alternatives for 2000 through 2002 at public meetings, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today.
The alternatives were developed over the past eight months with WDFW staff, hunters, the Game Management Advisory Council and members of the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission.
While the proposals have not been sharply defined because harvest results of the 1999 seasons have not been compiled and spring population surveys must be conducted, the proposals are based on the following general principles:
- Minimize changes to early general hunting seasons
- Ask the archery, muzzleloader and modern firearm hunting groups to share changes
- Include group size and hunting success rates when asking groups to share season changes
WDFW also will ask hunters to comment on proposals to require them to report the results of their hunts each year whether or not they were successful and for the commission to delegate some of its hunting season adoption authority to the director.
Public meetings on the proposals will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the following dates in these cities:
- Spokane: Jan. 18, Student Union Building, Spokane Falls Community College
- Wenatchee: Jan. 19, Chelan County PUD Auditorium, Wenatchee Avenue
- Yakima: Jan. 20, Double Tree Inn, exit 31 off Interstate 82
- Fife: Jan. 24, Best Western Executive Inn, exit 137 off Interstate 5
- Everett: Jan. 25, Snohomish County PUD, 2320 California St.
- Vancouver: Jan. 26, Water Resources Education Center, 4600 Columbia Way
- Aberdeen: Jan. 27, Bishop Center, Grays Harbor College
WDFW will use the comments received to develop recommendations for commission consideration when it meets April 7 and 8 in Yakima.
