OLYMPIA - A popular shellfish access site on Quilcene Bay will be closed from Aug. 3 through November while work is done to restore Indian George Creek Estuary to a more natural condition.
In the meantime, signs will be posted at the Quilcene access site on Linger Longer Road informing visitors about the project and directing them to an alternate parking area approximately half a mile away, said Ginna Correa, a biologist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), which owns the site.
People will still be able to access the tidelands around Indian George Creek by foot and by boat, Correa said.
"The closure is necessary to protect public safety around the actual work site," she said. "The work will be confined to the estuary, so people will still be able to reach the tidelands from other points," she said.
The project, a joint effort by WDFW and the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, will involve removing three derelict barges from the estuary and removing fill to restore the natural habitat, Correa said. Ten to 20 parking stalls and two vault toilets will also be included as part of the project.
