OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) today announced a temporary public closure at its Soos Creek Hatchery in Auburn for improvements through September 2023.

Improvements include replacing an existing supply pipe with new upsized pipe to provide fish with additional water. This summer’s construction is part of a larger project slated for next summer. Future phases include a new incubation treatment facility to improve fish health, a new water reuse system to use water more efficiently, and improvements for the existing fish release system. The hatchery will remain operational during the public closure.

Built in 1901, Soos Creek Hatchery is one of Washington state’s oldest hatcheries. A stronghold for Puget Sound’s hatchery production, it produces millions of Chinook, coho, and steelhead every year to enhance fishing opportunities and help conserve fish for the future.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife works to preserve, protect and perpetuate fish, wildlife and ecosystems while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational and commercial opportunities.
