OLYMPIA - Shellfish managers will solicit ideas about the fall razor clam season during a series of five public meetings in western Washington in September.
Biologists for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will also review the 2005-06 season and discuss the findings of a recently completed razor clam stock assessment for the Washington coast.
"We plan to use these meetings to update folks on the results of our recently completed stock assessments and to talk about current marine toxin levels," said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager. "The meetings are also a great chance to hear people's thoughts and suggestions for the coming season."
The fall season will be set after the public has had a chance to comment, he said.
The public meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the following locations:
- Fife - Monday, Sept. 18, at Fife High School in the school administration building, 5802 20th St. E. (off Interstate 5).
- Ocean Shores - Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Shilo Inn (Pacific/Rainier Room), 707 Ocean Shores Blvd. N.W.
- Westport - Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Ocosta High School library, 2580 Montesano St.
- Long Beach - Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Super 8 Motel, 500 Ocean Beach Blvd.
- Forks - Friday, Sept. 22, at the Olympic Natural Resource Center, 1445 S. Forks Ave.
The Sept. 22 meeting in Forks will be co-presented by staff from Olympic National Park and WDFW. The park and WDFW jointly manage the razor clam fishery at Kalaloch, which is part of the park's 73-mile Pacific coast section.
"We're happy to work with WDFW to provide another season of clamming along beautiful Kalaloch beach," said Bill Laitner, Olympic National Park superintendent.
People who are unable to attend the public meetings can submit written comments to WDFW through Sept. 25. Comments should be mailed to Dan Ayres, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, 600 Capitol Way N., Olympia, WA 98501-1091 or sent via e-mail (fishpgm@dfw.wa.gov) to the attention of Dan Ayres.
Comments about the Kalaloch razor clam season can be submitted through Sept. 30 to Superintendent, Olympic National Park, 600 East Park Ave., Port Angeles, WA 98362 or via e-mail to olym_ea@nps.gov .
